The Museum-First Floor
The Ossining Room:
Here are displayed Indian artifacts,
memorabilia from Sing Sing Prison, early
settler tools and utensils, and a representative collection
of China. Oil paintings of our village by
local residents adorn the walls along with our beautiful
community quilt made by friends of the
Society in 1981.
Special Exhibit Room:
In this room are display cases of
collections belonging to the society and on
private loan to us, which are changed with regularity. This
room also contains a portion of the
Museum's valuable art collection.
Portrait Gallery: This area has several large framed
portraits of early village residents.
Historic Landmark: Our home here dates back to 1872,
formally owned by Richard Austin. The
property dates back to the year 1853 when it was owned by
Jeremiah Sniffen, father-in-law of Mr.
Austin.
The Ossining Historical Society was founded in the 1931 and
was housed at Washington School for
37 years. The museum was placed on the National Register in
1988.
The Museum-Second Floor
Small World: The enchanting center of this exhibit room is
the Victorian doll house, circa 1900,
complete in the minutest detail. Antique dolls, toys,
miniatures, old school books and photographs
make this room a favorite for our visitors, young and old.
Map Room and Military Exhibit:
Over 250 maps are catalogued and stored in this room, along with
maps and atlases, dating from 1785. Our new military
display
contains uniforms, photographs, memorials, citations,
medals, patches, rifles, swords, knives and other valuable
contributions oif the men and women of the Town of Ossining and
Villages of Ossining and Briarcliff Manor who served and died in
the service of their country.
Library: Contains over 1,000 volumes of books and
periodicals used for research and reference.
Office: Contains updated material obtained from newspapers,
along with vital statistics, pictorial,
genealogical, and historical records. The work is
accomplished by volunteer staff of four dedicated
workers.
Historic Sparta Cemetery
This two acre cemetery has pre-Revolutionary burials of
early settlers and many military
servicemen. It is located between Route 9 and Revolutionary
Road, south of the village. The
cemetery is owned and maintained by the Society.
